The Overwhelm of Relocation

Here at Live Love The Triangle, I often hear how stressful and overwhelming relocating can be, even if it is just across town. There is so much extra to think about and do that it can cause some people to hesitate. While it is very true, moving is stressful and difficult, we are here to help make it easier on you in any way we can! Myself and every agent at Live Love truly want to help, so please always ask your agent. Remember we do this every day and I’ve learned a few things along the way!

I know preparing to move and physically moving are such a tough, but exciting process. I’ve created a short checklist below with a few more ideas that can be easily used as you move through this major transition! Please always let me or your agent know if you have any questions throughout!

When you are preparing to move the very first thing we always recommend is spending time going through all of your stuff. Deciding what important items are worth hauling and what you can get rid of. Going through every closet and drawer will be worth it once you get to your new place, I promise this time is worth it! Also, if you are able to afford a moving company, start looking and collecting quotes from each one you find. Then call and speak to the company, get a feel for who they are because a moving company can make or break (literally) your moving experience. Go with your gut, even if it might be a slight bit more than you wanted to spend. If they can take care of your most prized possessions, it’s another step that will be completely worth it.

About a month before you actually move, you are going to want to notify many different places of your change of address. This in and of itself is overwhelming to think about how many places have or need your physical address. Below, we created a list of the most common places you may need to contact, utility companies being one of the most important. The bank and the post office are two of the other essentials, but could be easily forgotten!

Two weeks before the big move day is when you should get online to set up a DMV appointment to change your address. This is also a great time to contact your HOA if you have one, regarding your move. Another detail that slips our clients’ minds sometimes is letting lawn service or housekeepers know you will be moving. If it’s a move close by, then it will be a simple change of address for them! Now is also the time to start eating up all the food in the fridge and pantry. Trust me, you will thank yourself later when you did not order those groceries just to move them a few days later. Fit in and finish off as many ingredients as you and your family can in the days before you move!

One to two weeks out make sure you arrange for care of children and pets on moving day, if needed! Pets are difficult to keep track of in the craziness of the day and it will be sure to stress them out. If you have the ability to have someone care for them for the day, it will set your mind at ease!

Finally, make sure you take as many pictures as you can of your current home or living situation. With as many moves as I have personally been through, I always enjoy looking back at pictures of each place I lived. This current home is one you have made lots of memories in, good or bad, you will never regret taking those last pictures of every room!
